Our Story

How a vision of musical unity became a living, breathing nonprofit.

Where It Began

Lothlorien Inter-Cultural Music, Inc. grew from a lifelong artistic vision — the belief that the world's musical traditions are not separate but in deep, ongoing conversation with one another. That conviction found its fullest expression in the work of Jim Palmer, harpist, composer, North Indian classical musician, and teacher, whose extraordinary range as a musician made him a natural bridge between worlds.

Jim formed the East-West ensemble Lothlorien, which toured in the 1970s and 80s and produced two LP albums receiving international airplay. To sustain that work, Lothlorien formed a not-for-profit organization — sponsoring school residencies, concerts by major Indian artists, and diverse chamber music programs. That organization — incorporated as Lothlorien Inter-Cultural Music, Inc. — is the foundation of what we are rebuilding today.

Jim Palmer passed away, leaving behind a luminous legacy. We are working to reestablish the organization in his honor, guided by his vision and supported by his family.

Lothlorien

"The ensemble Lothlorien exemplified the spirit of East–West collaboration, blending Indian and Western instruments in original compositions that celebrated the unity of diverse musical traditions."

Lothlorien was a core group of four musicians — performing on flutes, guitar, harp, sarod, sitar, tamboura, tabla, santoor, trap set, and double bass, with guests on oboe and cello. Founded by Jim Palmer, the ensemble toured through the 1970s and 80s and produced two LP albums that received international airplay. Their concerts and school residencies introduced audiences to the profound possibilities of East–West musical dialogue.

Jim's Legacy

Jim Palmer was a harpist, composer, arranger, teacher, and North Indian classical musician of extraordinary range. He studied harp under Jeanne Fintz Goldstein — herself a student of Carlos Salzedo at the Curtis Institute — and North Indian classical music under master teacher Vasant Rai, concertizing on sarod, sarangi, and sitar at venues including the Nehru Center in London and Imperial College. He was also a founding member of the folk-rock band Merlin, a staff musician for the Performing Arts Foundation on Long Island, and the founder of Reel Recording, a mobile recording service. His harp arrangements were called the "gold standard" of the form.

Harpistic Publications preserves and shares Jim's sheet music and arrangements — works for solo harp, flute and harp, and other chamber combinations spanning beginner to advanced — as a living tribute to his legacy.

Mission & Values

Lothlorien Inter-Cultural Music, Inc. exists to foster a deeper public appreciation of the performing arts — with a focus on music and its related disciplines. We create opportunities for audiences to experience live performance, support the growth of emerging musicians, and offer concerts, workshops, seminars, and educational programs that serve and enrich our communities. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1981, our work is exclusively charitable, literary, and educational in purpose.

Unity in Diversity

We believe musical traditions are strongest when in dialogue — not competition. Every collaboration we support reflects the richness of cross-cultural encounter.

Artistic Depth

We honor the rigor and depth of both Indian classical and Western musical traditions, never treating either as mere backdrop for novelty.

Education & Access

Intercultural musical literacy should be widely accessible. We invest in workshops, publications, and community programs to spread that vision.

Living Legacy

We preserve the work of those who came before while creating new works that carry this tradition forward for the next generation of musicians.
